Even if it doesn't take the series to a higher ground with gameplay (it's exactly the same as the first two), it is a fun game with improved technical aspects. In the end, Alone in the Dark 3 rounds out the trilogy quite nicely. While the box boasts "up to 70 hours of gameplay," it can be finished easily in 20 hours. In this game, you can run away if you need to, and most of the cowboys aren't too hard to kill. This time around, however, the overall difficulty is not as high as Alone in the Dark 2. The puzzles are pretty difficult in Alone in the Dark 3, but are in the same vain as the first two games by requiring you to pick up a certain item and use it with another item, while others are just logic puzzles. The hand drawn backgrounds did a good job capturing the wild-west feel and atmosphere as you venture into saloons, banks, hotel rooms, and wander the streets of a realistic ghost town. Improved detail lets you see spurs, badges, holsters, and cowboy boots, making characters more believable. But this time around, the developers really enhanced the overall look of the game with higher polygon counts and animation that is more fluid. It's still a 3rd person action game with polygon characters set to hand drawn backgrounds. At heart, Alone in the Dark 3 is exactly the same game as the first two. With Alone in the Dark 3, the series takes another path by adopting a wild-west theme, making me skeptical, at first. Improving gameplay, graphics and challenge for the PC, the sequel, Alone in the Dark 2, had you fending off the bloodthirsty pirates of Hell's Kitchen instead of wandering the halls of an old mansion. This well received franchise, starting with the benchmark Alone in the Dark, set the standard for 3rd person games and definitely inspired contemporary titles like Resident Evil for the PlayStation.
